Ingredients
  

For the batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour You can substitute with whole wheat flour for a different flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup cold water Adjust if the batter is too thick.

For frying

  • 8 oz mushrooms Cleaned and stems removed.
  • Oil for frying Use a neutral oil with a high smoke point.

Preparation

  • Combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper in a mixing bowl.
  • Gradually add the cold water and whisk until you have a smooth batter.
  • Heat oil in a deep fryer or heavy skillet to 350°F (175°C).

Frying

  • Dip each mushroom into the batter, letting excess drip off.
  • Carefully place battered mushrooms into the hot oil in batches and fry until golden brown and crispy, about 4-5 minutes.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove fried mushrooms and drain on paper towels.

Notes

You can make the batter in advance and store it in the fridge. Leftover mushrooms should be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for best results.
